A girl celebrated her ninth birthday by buying lunch for police officers in Detroit ‘to show them that all lives matter’.
Samya McLaughlin decided to surprise the officers after seeing footage of the fatal Dallas shooting on TV.
She used the money she received for her birthday to buy sandwiches, crisps, fruit and cookies, earning a hug from a grateful officer and being named ‘officer of the day’ in the process.
Samya was watching the news with her grandmother when she saw the incident in Dallas, where five officers were killed.
I was thinking that I should feed the police officers because I wanted to show them that I support them and I thank them for all that they do.
I wanted to show them that all lives matter.
The touched officers presented Samya with gifts of her own as a thank you.
Her dad Sam Walker said: ‘It makes you feel proud. She has a big heart and she knows how to care, and she knows how to appreciate what’s going on.’
Her mother added: ‘We discuss things that’s going on. I always ask her how she feels about it.’
Samya also handed out about 30 bagged lunches to homeless people in Detroit’s Cass Corridor.
