Rio Olympics: Hagino clinches first swimming gold

Japan’s Kosuke Hagino claimed the first swimming gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympics with victory in the men’s 400 meter individual medley.

The 21-year-old – bronze medalist in London four years ago – led almost from the start in lane three, trailed initially by compatriot Daiya Seto, who eventually came home in third.

Hagino faced a late challenge from the aptly named Chase Kalisz, but the American was made to settle for silver as Hagino touched the wall in four minutes and 6.05 seconds.

The event kicked off an evening programme that will see a total of four gold medals handed out at the Rio de Janeiro’s Aquatics Stadium.
