Rio Olympics: Basketball | Nigeria defeat Croatia to keep dream aflame

Croatia's Darko Planinic (12) loses the ball in front of Nigeria's Michael Gbinije, right, during a basketball game at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers beat Croatia 90-77 to record their first win in the basketball event of the Olympics.

The Nigerian team led in all quarters of the match and never allowed the Europeans the chance to play their kind of game.

Nigeria having lost three games prior to the victory over Croatia will need to beat Brazil, in their last group match for a chance to qualify to the quarter-finals of the event.

D’Tigers suffered losses to Argentina, Lithuania and Spain ahead of their tie with Croatia.

After being well-defeated by Argentina in their opening game, the team put up a better performance against Lithuania, but victory remained elusive.

A late rally by D’Tigers almost turned the tie around with the game ending 89-80.

Against Spain, on Friday morning, their poor start continued as Spain defeated them 96-87.
