NFF: Federation set to brief FIFA on crises

Led by its president, Amaju Pinnick, officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), will get the opportunity to brief the new FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, on the crises dogging the country’s football, an official of the federation has said.

Reports yesterday had it that Pinnick led a delegation comprising the federation’s First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, to the 66th congress of the world football governing body, FIFA, in Mexico City.

It added that the congress, which holds on Thursday and Friday, will involve about 1,000 important personalities in world football.

Speaking on the congress, an NFF official, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian, “FIFA is interested in the Nigerian situation hence the NFF is among the federations likely to hold private discussions with Infantino at the event.

“FIFA has kept in touch with us since the renewed battle by the Giwa group to upset the administration of the game in the country. One thing they want to find out is the extent of government involvement in the crisis and I believe the meeting will give them a better picture of what is happening in Nigeria,” the source said.

In a release yesterday, NFF’s Assistant Director, Media, Ademola Olajire, revealed, “every FA President of the 209 members of FIFA is currently on the way to Mexico City. They are specially invited by FIFA alongside their Vice President and General Secretary. Nigeria’s Amaju Melvin Pinnick, Seyi Akinwunmi and Mohammed Sanusi are on their way as we speak.”

The Congress is expected to bring all 209-member associations up to speed on governance reforms approved by the extraordinary congress of February 26, 2016 and FIFA’s plans to enhance football development.

It will also be the first to be presided over by Infantino, who was elected at the Extraordinary Congress of February 26, as well as the first meeting under the revised FIFA Statutes that came into effect on April 27.
