Reeva Steenkamp: Father Says Oscar Pistorius ‘Has To Pay’ for Daughter’s Death

In an emotional testimony during the second day of Oscar Pistorius’ sentencing hearing, the father of Reeva Steenkamp says the double-amputee Olympic runner “has to pay” for his daughter’s killing.

“For me it has been difficult to forgive, but I feel that Oscar … has to pay. How long is up to the court and we will go by the decision of the court” said Barry Steenkamp on Tuesday according to media.

A weeping Steenkamp told a crowded courtroom— where many, including Pistorius, shed tears — of their daughter’s plan to look after him and his wife, June, in old age. He also asked for photos of his daughter’s body to be made public so that people could see her wounds, reports say.

Pistorius was first sentenced to five years in jail for manslaughter over the shooting of his girlfriend through a bathroom door in 2014. He got out on parole after one year. After an appeal by state prosecutors his conviction was changed to murder. Beginning on Monday, the sentencing hearing is expected to conclude at the end of this week.

“What she must have gone through in those split seconds. She must have been in so much fear and pain. That is what I think of all the time. I can see it myself. It must have been absolutely and utterly awful” said Steenkamp.
