A British teenage girl has fallen from the third floor of her holiday hotel in Mallorca after a string of similar incidents this year.

The accident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning and it is understood she suffered serious injuries.

The 17-year-old girl is said to have fallen from the third floor of a hotel situated in Calle Huguet des Far in Santa Ponça.

It is a popular resort on the south-west coast of Mallorca.

Early reports suggest she suffered severe injuries to her back and is in intensive care in a serious condition.

The emergency services rushed to the scene at about midnight as a result of a 112 call.

Police and medics attended and gave treatment to the teenager before she was taken to hospital.

The Civil Guard has launched an investigation to find out what happened and whether this was in any way linked to balconing or a trip or fall.

It is the sixth such incident in Mallorca this year and will provide yet more upset for tourism chiefs who only recently launched a new strategy for the island to present a cleaner and safer image away from booze culture.

Part of the strategy is to try to prevent constant falls from balconies, with hotels being encouraged to break up any parties or group drinking sessions.

Last month a British holidaymaker was left fighting for his life after falling head-first from a Magaluf hotel balcony just hours after arriving on the party island.

Andrew Rhys Phillips and a group of friends had just checked in and were preparing to go out for the evening when the horror incident happened.

That incident came just hours after a Brit who reportedly downed 75 shots in a Magaluf bar challenge collapsed in the street.

The man, thought to be in his late 20s, was apparently taken to hospital in a ‘serious condition’ when he knocked back the spirits as part of a dare.

Witnesses say he drunk five pints of beer in one bar before moving to another venue where he was encouraged by crowds to drink the liquor
