Alex Iwobi confident of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification

Alex Iwobi confident of 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification

Super Eagles forward, Alex Iwobi says he is confidence that Nigeria can qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

For the qualification series, the Super Eagles have been drawn in Group B with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia.

With only the top country in the group to qualify, Iwobi is pretty confident that Super Eagles will make the FIFA World Cup after missing out on the 2017 African Cup of Nations.

Iwobi believes Nigeria can overcome a tough group and qualify for the World Cup

The Nations Cup is the biggest sporting tournament in Africa, so we were gutted but as a team we have to look forward and focus on the World Cup and our qualification matches,” Iwobi told FIFA.com.

It is a tough group for sure, but I don’t think there are any easy groups – it’s international level competition. I’m confident we can prevail, we definitely have the players to. If we prepare well, focus and play to the best of our ability I’m sure we will qualify.

All the teams [in the group] are good teams that have been former AFCON winners, and have players playing at the highest level, so we know we’ll be up against well-prepared teams.”

Iwobi who last season broke in to the Super Eagles squad is also the nephew of former Nigeria international, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha.

Alex Iwobi reveals that his uncle, Jay Jay Okocha has been a mentor to him

The 20-year-old says Okocha played a role in his rapid rise with lots of guidance and advices.

He (Okocha)is my mums’ younger brother and was and is still a great role model to me on and off the pitch, as he always guides me and advises me with what I need to do to become the best athlete possible. So yes, he has had a big part in my development as a player,” the Arsenal forward revealed.

He has given me so much information on how to better myself as a person, as well as a player.

The advice I will always remember from him is to always play with a smile on my face and enjoy my football.”

Iwobi has been impressive for Arsenal in pre-season and will be looking forward to hold down a regular place in the Arsene Wenger led side.
